If you have a Pokemon binder, a shelf of Funko Pops, sealed LEGO in the cupboard, or a box of sports cards you have not touched in years, here is what actually happens when you take a collection to a Gold Coast shop, and how selling works at Frenly Bricks in Carrara specifically.
How shops actually assess a collection
Most shops price off recent sold prices, not asking prices or what a set cost when it was new. A graded card's value comes from what buyers are actually paying for that certification and grade right now, not from a listing sitting unsold on a marketplace at an inflated number. Sealed LEGO gets priced off retirement status and what sealed copies are actually moving for, not off what the box says.
This means the same collection can get different offers at different shops depending on how current their pricing data is, and it means a number a shop quotes you should come with reasoning attached, not just a figure. If a shop won't tell you why they landed on a price, that is worth asking about before you agree to anything.
What to sort before you go anywhere
Separate everything into rough categories first: sealed product, graded slabs, raw singles worth showing (hits, chase cards, alt arts), and bulk (commons, energy, low-value singles). Shops are generally not interested in pricing bulk individually, so don't spend an evening sorting a shoebox of commons by set expecting a line-by-line quote.
For LEGO, the sort is simpler: sealed versus built. Sealed sets, especially retired Star Wars, Ideas, Modulars and Creator Expert lines, are what shops chase hardest. Built sets and loose bricks sit in a much smaller market, and many shops won't take them at all.
For Funko, separate anything vaulted, exclusive, or convention-only from standard retail Pops, and don't worry too much about minor shelf wear on boxes. A worn box on a genuine grail is still worth showing rather than assuming it disqualifies the piece.
What a good spreadsheet includes
If you're dealing with anything more than a handful of items, a simple spreadsheet saves everyone time. Columns worth including: item name, set or series, condition (sealed, near mint, played, damaged), quantity, and for cards, the grading company and grade if applicable. A clear list means a shop can give you a real ballpark before you've even left the house.
Sealed versus loose, and why it changes everything
Sealed items carry a simple, verifiable condition: either the seal is intact or it isn't. That is why sealed LEGO and sealed collectible boxes can often be quoted from photos alone. Loose items, whether that's raw cards, built sets, or Pops out of box, need to be seen and handled in person, because condition has far more nuance: a soft corner, a print line, a paint rub, or a chip that a phone photo won't show clearly enough to price fairly.

LEGO

Funko Pop
Boxed or loose, one Pop or a couple of hundred. Chases, vaulted figures, convention exclusives and grails are always worth showing us first. Shelf wear on the box is fine.
Trading cards and sports cards
Pokemon, One Piece, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, Dragon Ball and the full sports range. We're after hits, chase cards, sealed product and graded slabs, not bulk, commons or energy. Vintage and Japanese cards are always of interest, and cards don't need to be graded first, raw is fine.
Should you grade before selling?
Usually not, unless you already suspect a specific card is a strong candidate and you're prepared to wait weeks for no guaranteed return. Most shops assess raw condition themselves without asking you to grade first. If you do want to explore grading, Premier Card Grading (PCG) operates out of Parramatta with drop-off and pickup through partner stores, and grades Pokemon, Magic, Flesh and Blood, Digimon, Dragon Ball Super and sports cards alongside PSA and BGS. Grading makes sense for a card you already believe is special, it rarely makes sense across an entire collection since the fee and wait time apply per card.

- We come back with a number. Priced off what things are genuinely selling for today, broken down so you can see which parts carry the value.
- Drop it in. Any day of the week at Carrara. Large collection? Message first so we can set aside proper time.
- Get paid on the spot. Cash or bank transfer, your choice, nothing held back and nothing on consignment.
Not on the Gold Coast? Mail-in selling
In-store is still the simplest way to sell, you get an answer on the spot and walk out paid the same day. If you're too far away to make the trip, we take mail-ins on these terms:
- Get a quote first. Don't post anything before we've agreed on a number, we can't take responsibility for parcels that turn up unannounced.
- You cover postage, both ways. Send it tracked and insured, at your own cost. If we can't agree on a number and it goes back to you, return postage is on you as well.
- Send us the tracking number. As soon as it's lodged, message us the tracking number and carrier.
- We check everything on arrival. Condition and contents get verified against what you described.
- Payment goes out once it's confirmed. By bank transfer, the same day we finish checking. If it doesn't match the description, we'll come back with a revised number, you can accept it or we'll post it back at your cost.
Once a parcel is with Australia Post or a courier, it's out of our hands and we're not liable for loss, damage or delays in either direction, which is exactly why we ask you to insure it properly.
Packing your collection for mail-in sale
Pack it like it's going to get thrown around in transit, because it might be.
LEGO
Leave sealed boxes sealed, don't cut or peel the shrink wrap. Wrap each set individually since corners and edges are where value is lost. Minifigures go in a small rigid container or bagged individually, never loose in the carton.
Funko Pop
Pop protectors are ideal if you have them, though not required. Wrap each box individually, don't tape directly onto the box, and pack tightly so boxes can't rub against each other. Rigid outer carton, not a soft satchel.
Cards
Sleeve anything valuable and place it in a top loader, then tape or bag it shut. Send hits only, bulk just adds postage without adding value we can price.
Graded slabs
Wrap every slab individually, never let two slabs touch. Sandwich between rigid card or use a purpose-made slab mailer. Tracked and insured shipping is a must, no exceptions.
Common questions about selling to us
Why don't you pay before you've received the item?
Condition is the whole ballgame, and we can't accurately assess it from a photo, a card that looks near mint on a phone camera can have a soft corner you'd only catch in hand. Checking first protects both sides of the sale.
Do I need to book an appointment?
Not for a handful of items, just come in. If your collection fills the boot of a car, message us first so someone's free to sit down and go through it properly.
Can I keep some pieces and only sell the rest?
Of course. Plenty of people sell everything in one go, and plenty keep their favourites. We'll quote either way and won't push you to include anything you're not ready to part with.
